PRAXIS Information
Every University or College that offers programs leading to teacher certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required to assess pre-certification students' basic knowledge. In addition, Pennsylvania requires all its teacher certification candidates to meet the state requirements regarding the completion of the Praxis assessments prior to receiving certification. To this end the Temple University PHETE program requires ALL its students to meet the following minimum scores on the PPST for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics as well as the Fundamental Subjects Content Knowledge test prior to admission into the Junior year. During the Senior year and prior to student teaching, ALL PHETE students must meet the minimum score on the Health and Physical Education Content Knowledge test.

Composite Option * allows applicants to achieve less than the original minimum scores in one or more of the PPSTs as long as their minimum scores in those tests are equal to or greater than the Composite minimums listed and their composite sum totals 521 or more. For example, if an applicant had 171, 170, 180 respectively, this would be less than the original minimums in Reading and Writing but at the composite minimums for those two scores. The 180 is greater than the 173 original minimum and significantly more that when added to the other two scores, the composite sum equals 521 which means this applicant would qualify for certification.
